The New York Vipassana Association (NYVA) is pleased to organize the first ever 10-day course at Sharpe Reservation’s Camp Hayden Marks, in Fishkill, NY as well as the first large 10-day course in the NY tri-metro state region. Only an hour and a half by car or train from NYC, Sharpe Reservation is a massive, 2000 acre property owned by the Fresh Air Fund, an organization that has been offering underprivileged children summer camp experiences free of charge since 1877. Outside of their peak summer season, Sharpe Reservation rents their facilities to outside groups like ours.

Since this the first time we’ve ever used this site, we have created this info page so that students can get a sense of the setting and the types of accommodations on offer. Please read on for more information regarding transportation as well.

Camp Hayden Marks

Set against a quiet lake, Camp Hayden Marks is surrounded by forest with extensive walking paths. It also features a large dining hall with a commercial kitchen, separate meditation hall facilities, and both indoor heated accommodations as well as outdoor wooden cabins.

NOTE: The camp is large and integrated into its natural environment, so participants should be comfortable walking 5-10 minutes at a time over uneven terrain.

Accommodations

Students will be sleeping in one of two kinds of accommodations:

  1. Wooden cabins, which are uninsulated and unheated, will be shared between 1-8 other students and have electricity and lights. In the early mornings and nights, the temperatures can be cool, and possibly cold. Average night temperatures may be in the 50s. Students must bring warm bedding. Communal toilets/showers are located about 20-100 yards away from the cabins. Showers have hot-water in unheated rooms.
  2. Indoor, heated dormitories (shared between 5-20 people depending on the dorm) with attached toilets but no showers. Showers are available at communal bathhouses located outside the dorm buildings

We will follow a generic policy of placing older applicants indoors and younger applicants in the cabins. However, if you have a strong preference for one or the other, please contact us to let management know.

If you feel that the simple nature of this camp would be too difficult for you, we encourage you to sign up for a course at an established center.
